Quilt design of the week: Photo piecing an English seaside scene

photo pieced quilt design

There may be a few clouds in the sky right now, but that’s not going to stop us enjoying a good old British summer complete with fish and chips, walks on the beach and sticks of rock.

This gorgeous quilt design from The Purl Bee takes an iconic scene – rows of colourful beach huts – and transforms it into a soft and sewn beauty. The picture is pieced together from an original photograph, using the strip piecing technique.

Piecing a quilt from a photograph can be tricky, but this image’s straight lines helped with the construction. Once you’ve got the hang of theis technique, you can use it to create a quilt design from almost any photograph.

The finished seaside quilt design is bright and bold with just a touch of the romantic about it, and we wouldn’t mind seeing it hung up or draped over a chair in our own (imaginary) beach hut.

You can get the full tutorial over at The Purl Bee. Be sure to also take a look at their range of mini quilt patterns if you fancy trying something new this summer.
